10 things That Happened In 2017 That Made Us Ashamed Of Being Indians
It is the starting of a fresh year and we can’t deny the fact that 2017 had a lot in store for us. Many incidents took place across the globe. Of course, we achieved many milestones that will be written in history few years down the line. It will not be true to say that our country India has been progressive as a few regressive incidents of 2017 will make us question ourselves if all these would change someday. Let us have a look at twenty those incidents that have brought the question, “Will this ever change?”
10 incidents that showed the true image of a regressive India:
The first one in the list is a Bollywood movie named ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, which was banned as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief could not deal with the fact that women can have the urge to have sex. This is the desire which is common between both men and women but somehow some people could not digest it.
A stampede happened in the heart of Mumbai city that shook the entire nation. Elphinstone railway station was the spot where the stampede happened that killed 40 people and several got injured.
Diwali is one of the most important festivals in Indian culture as it has been celebrated for centuries and the same tradition has been followed till now. But, last year the government banned crackers due to pollution that is killing more people than any other disease.
Our country has its religious values but blind followers elevated a con man Gurmeet Ram Rahim to become a god man. The same man is in jail for raping a girl for years but still there are many who will not leave ‘following’ such people. People trusted him and followed his words so much that violent protests and incidents took place when he was arrested. Such is our nation!
The year 2017 will be noted in the Indian history of medical science as a number of children died in hospitals due to lack of basic facilities like oxygen cylinders. This happened in Gorakhpur BRD Medical hospital where in the first 48 hours 30 children died. The number went up to 64. We are known for medical tourism at one hand and on the other hand, we have lack of oxygen cylinder which is a basic need.
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Taj Mahal, the symbol of love was excluded from the budget due to religious differences in the country. There are still millions of tourists that visit the monument every year but it is quite hard to digest the current status of building. No one is transparent about the reason behind the exclusion; however, it brings everyone to the conclusion that it may not be Indian enough to be considered.
Something very astonishing that came up in the year 2017 was the banning of condom ads. The step had been taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. No condom ad will be aired between 6 am and 10 pm.
As Gaurakshaks, India has been targeting the minorities from the country. Protection of cow is ethical but killing Muslims absolutely unethical. Till date 24 Muslims have been killed in the name of cow protection.
We also heard of the killing of one of the veteran journalist Gauri Lankesh last year. She was a journalist activist and killed for not fearing anyone and writing the truth every time. Isn’t this how media needs to work?
We raise our voice for punishing rapists but hey! Something that will run chill down your spine is a rape that was openly filmed by the people on a road in Vishakhapatnam but no one came for the woman’s rescue.
If we rise above all these regressive actions, we can think of a new India.
