Skin is the most exposed organ in the body which can cause a number of problems including cancer. The most common issue related to the skin is the ageing which occurs with fine lines and wrinkles on the face. As per the latest study conducted by the researchers at Pennsylvania State University, consuming mushrooms on regular basis can actually help you to fight ageing. They are considered to be the single source of the antioxidants ergothioneine and glutathione which are associated with the anti-ageing properties.

The study was published in the journal of Food Chemistry which stated that these mushrooms are full of antioxidants as they have tested around 13 species of them. The most common white button mushroom usually has low levels of antioxidants but it is still more than that of the non-mushroom diet. In all the 13 species, wild porcini mushroom considered too has high levels of antioxidants.

As per the scientists, there are some foods which lose their health benefits while cooking them but mushroom appear to be heat-stable which makes them unaffected. One of the researchers who also stated the fact about the free radical theory which states that when the food is oxidised, it produces the energy but there are also a number of free radicals that are produced that are side products of that action and many of these are quite toxic. Our body has the mechanisms to control the antioxidants but eventually, these free radicals will add up to cause damage which are related to major problems like cancer, aging, coronary heart disease, and Alzheimer.

There are countries like France and Italy which already has more ergothioneine in their diets have lower incidences of neurodegenerative diseases as the intake of antioxidant seen in their diet is about 3 milligrams per day. The numbers are high compared to the countries like United States which have lower amount of ergothioneine in their diet that increases the risk of diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer.
